DJ SARASA has released a total of 16 compilations and mixes and has performed in Japan, the US, Canada, Australia, Dubai, China, Singapore, Thailand, Malaysia, Taiwan, Germany, and India. With her crossover selection of Hip Hop, Funk, Disco, Soul, Jazz, Breakbeats, and House music and with her dedication as a turntablist DJ, she can please any music crowd. Whether it be an audience over 5,000 people at Chingay Parade (Singapore’s largest street fair), or at a fancy and low-key venue such as Blue Note New York, where she recently performed at the Hurricane Sandy relief show in 2012, her ability to cater to her surroundings at anytime has made DJ SARASA one of Japan’s most popular international DJs.

Born in Tokyo, raised in New York, and further schooled around Toronto, her DJ career first began in college in Canada, where she had her own Hip Hop radio show at her college radio station and was known as “Silverboombox”. After graduation, she landed a marketing job in the Film Department of avex Japan and worked on the Japanese launch and promotional campaign for both “Block Party” by Dave Chappelle and “RIZE” by David LaChappelle. Soon after that, she made the decision to pursue a DJ career in Japan as DJ SARASA, her real name, instead of “Silverboombox” because it was too difficult for Japanese people to pronounce.

DJ SARASA was also the official DJ for Illa J (younger brother of the late J Dilla) in 2010 from his “Tribute to J Dilla” show in Japan. Furthermore, she has collaborated with Brownman, the trumpet player who replaced Donald Byrd in “Guru’s Jazzmatazz”, and was the DJ counterpart for his new project “DJ + HORN” that he created with DJ Cutler (DJ for Jeru the Damaja). DJ Premier also participated in this project prior to DJ SARASA.

As a producer, DJ SARASA has worked with Elzhi (Slum Village), Raekwon (Wu-Tang Clan) and Masia One, and produced the music for Nike Europe’s Nike iD (Troupe) website.

DJ SARASA is also known for her Hip Hop parties in Japan, such as her Halloween Hip Hop parties, where she dresses up in outrageously clever Hip Hop costumes every year, and the “Midnight Block Party” that she hosts 2-3 times a year in Tokyo and Osaka. These events help teach the history of Hip Hop to Japanese people by incorporating break dancing, the b-girl/b-boy culture, aerosol art, and DJs spinning old school Hip Hop. The most successful event so far was “Legends” in Tokyo, where she headlined the show with her special guest, Grandmaster Flash” in late 2012.

DJ SARASA not only she hosts events but is also the top choice for promoters to book as an opening act for overseas artists that tour Japan. She has performed alongside Questlove, DJ Premier, Pete Philly & Perquisite, Pete Rock, Steph Pockets, Group Home, Bow Wow, DJ Muro, Large Professor, DJ Krush, C.L. Smooth, The Roots, DJ Evil Dee, Funky DL, Percee P, Lupe Fiasco, Hieroglyphics, Rascalz, The Rebirth, K-OS, The Brand New Heavies, K’ naan, Masia One, Kool Keith, Verbal, DJ Kentaro, Mighty Crown, Aceyalone, Imani (The Pharcyde), Blackmoon, Black Milk, Black Sheep, Smiff N Wessun, Nice and Smooth, Dilated Peoples, De La Soul, Marley Marl, Brownman, Grandmaster Flash, The Beat Junkies, and many more.

As one of Tokyo’s key fashion icons, DJ SARASA has been sponsored by brands such as Louis Vuitton, Rugby by Ralph Lauren, Fossil, Casio, Nike and Adidas, and has also launched her own street-wear apparel and accessories brand called MYNORITY CLASSICS. The brand has collaborated with P.H.A.S.E.2, legendary aerosol artist from NYC, MSGR, KIKS TYO, and Manhattan Records. MYNORITY CLASSICS has received worldwide recognition from the “MYC Hip Hop Playing Cards” and was featured in The Source, Hypebeast, Freshness Magazine, and many other influential international and Japanese publications.
